Toy-Ventures: Remco Monsters at Home

It's October and I'm going to talk about nothin' but Monster Toys and let's start with an underrated classic, the Remco Monsters at Home line. This series of Universal Monsters hand puppets were based on the Remco 9" Figures that came a few years before and rarely get the spotlight.

Lincoln Monsters in the 1976 Galoob Catalog

It wouldn't be Halloween without me waxing poetic about my favourite monster toy line of all time, the Lincoln Monsters.

This year I came across one of my absolute grails, in the form of finding the 1976 Galoob toys catalog. Although Galoob was later known for licensed items  and things such as Micro Machines, 1976 saw them as more of an importer of Hong Kong novelties including items produced by Lincoln International.

Here they are featured among the Lincoln Action Soldier toys and other Rack Toy merchandise. Galoob was definitely the the company that got the following memorable Montgomery Ward's catalog spread from 1976:

Remco Monsterizer Video

One of my favourite monster toys of all time is the Remco Monsterizer, even though it doesn't a have ton of play value, it's just such a nice and thoughtful prop.

I was happy to discover that mine actually worked the other day and it inspired me to make this little video short all about it. Special thanks to my ever patient assistant, my daughter for her hand modelling. Hope you enjoy it!

Mego Mad Monsters Love

I adore the Mego Mad Monsters, it's definitely in my top five all time Monster toy lines (which I'll speak more about this month). While Mego didn't get the Universal license, they created a really crazy series of generic Monster figures that even glow in the dark!

Here's Mego Dracula and the Mummy in their glowing form.

Here is the stunning Mego Counter Display box featuring gorgeous art by the legendary Gray Morrow.

I don't have all of the Mad Monsters in every one of their packaging formats but I am obsessed with Frankenstein, so i grab every single thing I see that I don't have.

For more on the Mego Mad Monsters, you should really visit the Mego Museum Galleries it's the best resource there is for the line.

Pod Stallions Episode 23: Monster Movies

As we are both lovers of Monster Cinema or some call it "Creature Features" it makes sense for J and B to count down their top ten favourite Monster movies.

By favourite, we do not mean "best" or greatest, just our personal favourites.

Our top tens vary wildly which makes for an interesting discussion, Jason seems to prefer classic film while Brian seems to enjoy mostly junk food. The list wildly ping pongs between the houses of Hammer, Toho, Hemisphere, Independant International and Señor Spielbergo.

Along the way we discuss Karloff, Chaney, Yaphet Kotto, Stephen King, Doctor Who, Paul Naschy, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and loads more.

Happy Halloween from Pod Stallions!

1976 Ben Cooper Halloween Catalog

Ben Cooper was the leading manufacturer of Halloween costumes and Novelties in the United States during the 1970s.

This extensive 1976 catalog really demonstrates the power house licenses they had from the Universal Monsters and Mickey Mouse, the Superheroes of both Marvel and DC to TV sensations like the Six Million Dollar Man and the Sleestaks, Ben Cooper had almost a stranglehold on what kids liked .

Bendy Mummy meets the Bendy Wolfman

I've never blogged about these two, the jewels of my bendy collection, the Mummy (with card artwork swiped from the Aurora model) and the Wolfman!

Not sure who this shirtless gentleman is but he's no Lon Chaney Jr.

Unless that money tree i planted blooms, this is the closest I'll ever come to this lagoon dweller....

Sungold Wolfman

I'm not a big dabbler in 80s toys but these cheap knock offs from a company called Sungold do intrigue me. They did the usual suspects (Frankenstein, Dracula, Mummy, Hunchback) with Freddy Kruger thrown in to keep it topical.

The thing I liked about this Wolfman is it's pretty obviously Lon Chaney and whats more, it's a really decent likeness. That's cause the fine folks at Sun Gold just copied the existing Marx Monster figures from the 1960s to produce this dollar store  nugget.

The Wolfman for Mach 2

My pal Steve from Collecting Superman unearthed this amazing bit of 70s fashion greatness. Honestly, I can't think of something that epitomizes this site better than this, especially during the month of Halloween.

Trouble is, Steve is keeping it even though it's obvious place in history is in my basement.

The Victim Mystery Solved

For years now, it's been bugging me if this 6 inch fashion doll that has been dubbed "The Victim" and said to be part of the Lincoln Monsters line of toys was a real thing or not. I had heard from people over the years who claimed to have her as a kid or saw her in an obscure catalog. However, nobody could honestly place where.

That is until I met my pal Corey at last weekend's Megomeet toy show and he handed me the 1975 Spiegel catalog, a gap in my already over the top catalog library. And this is the first thing I saw:

There she was, the "girl victim", her size and outfit have always suggested to me that she was some sort of unsold Dawn knockoff,  merely added to the offering but she was marketed as something the monsters had their way with.

I still can't believe that this was a thing, part of me doubted it merely because it seemed so wrong headed,  especially when you consider all the trouble Aurora got into with their girl victim model kit in 1971. It seems weird that both the Spiegel buyer and the company repping Lincoln in the United States hadn't noticed a national boycott.
