Universal, and not so Universal Halloween Die Cuts!

Please enjoy another guest post by my pal Matt, who will take us to school on vintage Halloween decorations- BrAin.

Greetings boils and ghouls!

Today's post features some of the rarest, best, and most sought after and valuable Halloween die-cuts ever made based on the universal monsters.

Some of them are solid cutouts, and others are jointed figures. All of them are from that wonderful period of the late 1970s and early 1980s when, in my humble opinion, the golden age of Halloween die-cuts was occurring.

This is not the full extent of my Halloween die-cut collection. But I decided to limit today to just the die cuts that have a universal monster connection. Enjoy!

1) Eureka die cuts Eureka was a company famous for its holiday decorations, they would make cardboard die cuts as well as tissue paper accordion decorations for Valentines, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, Christmas, and of course, Halloween.

Iconic Action Figure Brand Mego Reveals First Wave Characters

Iconic Action Figure Brand Mego Reveals First Wave Characters
The hit toy line rolls out on Target shelves this August

New York, New York – July 20, 2018 – Mego Corporation is revealing its first wave of Mego action figures, which will be available exclusively at Target this August. Marty Abrams and Joe Namath will be at San Diego Comic-Con to unveil the first wave of figures, and Comic-Con guests will have a unique opportunity to purchase a limited number of the new action figures before they launch at Target. All items will be signed by Marty Abrams and Joe Namath.

The first wave of characters includes:
Sulu, originally portrayed by George Takei, in the original Star Trek series is featured wearing his classic federation uniform. Sulu is known for bringing peace to the intergalactic universe as helmsman of the USS Enterprise. His new action figure comes equipped with a to-scale Phaser, as Sulu is always ready for more Star Trek action.

Kelly Garrett, one of the original members of Charlie’s Angels, is featured with a fashionable 70s-era show-stopping outfit. The figure is modeled after Jaclyn Smith, who originated the role. With a mane of feathered hair and rocking bell bottoms, she’s still Charlie’s right-hand woman.

Peg Bundy is America’s favorite mom. She will be featured wearing her iconic leopard unitard—the perfect complement to her ever-feisty attitude. Peg’s figurine mimics her character and also includes her classic must-have—a box of bonbons.

Action Jackson, is back in action! Jackson is a crime fighter, with an attitude as hard and flinty as his punches. Styled sporting his original blue jumpsuit.

Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli (aka Fonzie) may wear a tough-guy black leather jacket, but underneath he was often the resident softie on Happy Days. This new action figure also comes with Fonzie’s trademark comb to keep his hair looking good. Forever cool, The Fonz is a must-have for your Mego collection!

Norm Peterson knows how to relax, and is featured wearing his classic after-work drinks outfit; an office-ready suit. He was Sam’s most devoted customer on Cheers and the new figure would not be complete without Norm’s ever-present accessory—a mug of beer, naturally.

Piper Halliwell, one of the most powerful witches of all time has now come become immortalized as a Mego figure. Piper initially possesses the power to freeze her surrounding environment. As the series progresses, she also receives the power to cause evil beings or objects to spontaneously explode using her hands. Piper has her spell book as her featured accessory and is dressed in a red top, jeans and high heels.

Dracula, portrayed by Bela Lugosi, is back to stalk us all! Transylvania’s most famous resident is known for feeding on the blood of humans to maintain his power and vampire-style good looks. In his tuxedo and cape, Drac’s always in style, especially when he’s looking to lure new prey.

Alice, the long-serving housekeeper from The Brady Bunch, wouldn’t look quite the same without her iconic uniform. More than a mere housekeeper, Alice was also a true friend to the Brady family and its brood of kids, and her figurine would not be complete without her classic tight curls, piece of cake and big, friendly smile.

Tootsie, the youngest character from Facts of Life, Tootie Ramsey was best known for her braces and penchant for rollerskates and gossiping. This iconic character sports her iconic school uniform and comes equipped with a notebook, to take down the good, the bad- you know, the facts of life.

Mr. Chekov, a classic character from the original Star Trek, is featured wearing his distinct federation uniform. Not only navigator of The USS Enterprise, Chekov also comes equipped with a Phaser and tricorder to help keep the iconic spaceship on course.

Jimi Hendrix, one of the most influential rock guitarists in history, is getting the Mego Icon treatment! His figure, in fact, sports the outfit made famous on the album cover of Woodstock, complete with the white, fringed boho jacket, red bandana and his classic afro. It’s time to get your collection rocking!

Classic Wonder Woman is wearing her iconic gold tiara and original power suit—and she is here to seriously kick some criminal butt!

General Zod: Superman’s greatest foe is back and wearing the costume made famous by Mego the first time around. He also comes with a side of Kryptonite—an important accessory for defeating Superman and, you know, taking over Earth.

Year One Batman, the crime-fighting superhero will be featured wearing his batsuit and his iconic Batarang. Watch out villains of Gotham City!

Harley Quinn, the Joker’s ever-devoted partner in crime and sidekick, is wearing her original outfit with her mallet poised to take over the town.
I Dream of Jeannie, Jeannie and Tony will be featured together in this box set that includes Jeannie’s bottle. A genie who is rescued by her master Tony Nelson, Jeannie will be wearing her classic wish-granting pink Arabian outfit, while Tony wears his classic military uniform.

Mirror Universe Star Trek, The bridge crew from one of the most significant sci-fi series of all time aim to keep the peace in the universe, and this box set will include Captain Kirk and his first officer, Spock. They will be wearing their Star Trek Mirror Universe outfits—and you certainly can’t have one without the other!

Denys Fisher Monster Factory

Sometimes I buy Monster toys and then totally forget about them in October, case in point this set. A wonderful "do it yourself" craft set from the UK that includes Frankenstein, the Wolfman and Dracula (the Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry of the monster world).

What's that you ask? Can we look inside Brain? Your wish is granted after the jump!

More Super 8 Monsters

This year my collection of Super 8 Monster movies has increased 300 fold (mainly cause i started with like one last year). While I planned to only buy these in the wild, some good deals on our vintage toys facebook group combined with Rodan coming from a generous friend makes me a happy boy.

I'm picky what monster movies I get on Super 8 but honestly Toho, Hammer and Harryhausen are everything right about the genre to me.

Pod Stallions 56: Hammer Films

Episode 56 is all about the films by England's Hammer studios and we honestly try to mention all of them including the one's we haven't seen!

Our exhaustive retrospective talks about all the sexy vampires, frankenstein monsters, mummies, zombies that the studio that dripped blood could produce!

Some of the sidetrack subjects we touch upon are action figures, Amicus movies,  Doctor Who, Thriller and i think Jason mentions a little film called "Blade Runner 2049".

AHI Dracula on the card

I had a nice contribution by a fellow named Bob last night of this Azrak Hamway Dracula on the card. I actually didn't have this version in the AHI Monsters gallery so it was a welcome addition.

Dracula was sold in the AHI Official World Famous Super Monsters wave but in a way that distinguished him from the other monsters. The other monsters aren't mention on the card, nor are the monsters, just a huge portrait of Dracula.

Dracula didn't get a jiggler or a water pistol and his Bend N Flex figure looked more like Christopher Lee to be honest.

It's largely assumed this was due to ongoing litigation between Lugosi's estate and Universal Studios.

Most licensed 70s Dracula stuff is somewhat generic, the AHI Dracula is really no different

One of the more puzzling items is the presence of Bela on the card art.

I'm assuming that use of his likeness on packaging was somewhat undefined at the time because his does appear on packaging, trading cards and other items but never in figure form.

Pod Stallions 36: Horror Comedies

A special Saturday episode of PodStallions to celebrate Halloween. We actually lost our Halloween episode due to a computer glitch, so like champions we recorded a new one yesterday.

Episode 36 is dedicated to the lighter side of horror as we tick down a long list of horror comedies and give our thoughts, everything from Abbot &Costello to the Lemon Grove kids to Young Frankenstein and even more modern classics like Beetlejuice and the academy award winning Jekyll and Hyde...together again.

Happy Halloween everybody!

Lincoln Monsters in the 1976 Galoob Catalog

It wouldn't be Halloween without me waxing poetic about my favourite monster toy line of all time, the Lincoln Monsters.

This year I came across one of my absolute grails, in the form of finding the 1976 Galoob toys catalog. Although Galoob was later known for licensed items  and things such as Micro Machines, 1976 saw them as more of an importer of Hong Kong novelties including items produced by Lincoln International.

Here they are featured among the Lincoln Action Soldier toys and other Rack Toy merchandise. Galoob was definitely the the company that got the following memorable Montgomery Ward's catalog spread from 1976:

Remco Monsterizer Video

One of my favourite monster toys of all time is the Remco Monsterizer, even though it doesn't a have ton of play value, it's just such a nice and thoughtful prop.

I was happy to discover that mine actually worked the other day and it inspired me to make this little video short all about it. Special thanks to my ever patient assistant, my daughter for her hand modelling. Hope you enjoy it!

Remco Monsters Glow in the Dark Haunted House

Glass Lite Dracula from Brazil

One of my favourite monster toys of late is this tremendously quirky 1980s action figure made in  Brazil by the famous (to Star Wars collectors) Glasslite toy company.

Glasslite simply released the single 3 3/4" Dracula, no other monsters appear on the card and he's a pretty sweet figure but that's not the best part.

They also created this killer Dracula gift set that gives Vlad a sweet convertible Porsche and a Monster Truck! It's so wonderfully silly that I absolutely want it. .

Full Colour Monster Kits!

Torn right from the pages of Famous Monsters, the Aurora Monsters of the Movies series is easily one of the "top five" monster kit series of all time.

Mego Mad Monsters Love

I adore the Mego Mad Monsters, it's definitely in my top five all time Monster toy lines (which I'll speak more about this month). While Mego didn't get the Universal license, they created a really crazy series of generic Monster figures that even glow in the dark!

Here's Mego Dracula and the Mummy in their glowing form.

Here is the stunning Mego Counter Display box featuring gorgeous art by the legendary Gray Morrow.

I don't have all of the Mad Monsters in every one of their packaging formats but I am obsessed with Frankenstein, so i grab every single thing I see that I don't have.

For more on the Mego Mad Monsters, you should really visit the Mego Museum Galleries it's the best resource there is for the line.

Pod Stallions Episode 31: Christopher Lee

This month as we lost one of the most iconic character actors to walk this earth in the form of Christopher Lee.

This episode tries to discuss as much as possible about the man and his exhaustive career, the hammer horror days, James Bond, Space:1999, Captain Invincible, Starship Invasions and that time he fought Captain America.

We, of course, digress into a discussion about action figures, Doctor Who, Peter Cushing and much, much more.

Pod Stallions Episode 23: Monster Movies

As we are both lovers of Monster Cinema or some call it "Creature Features" it makes sense for J and B to count down their top ten favourite Monster movies.

By favourite, we do not mean "best" or greatest, just our personal favourites.

Our top tens vary wildly which makes for an interesting discussion, Jason seems to prefer classic film while Brian seems to enjoy mostly junk food. The list wildly ping pongs between the houses of Hammer, Toho, Hemisphere, Independant International and Señor Spielbergo.

Along the way we discuss Karloff, Chaney, Yaphet Kotto, Stephen King, Doctor Who, Paul Naschy, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and loads more.

Happy Halloween from Pod Stallions!

The Sweet Smell of Dracula

I couldn't pass this up recently at a flea market, an early 80s Dracula air freshener and it glows in the dark (a total weakness for me). I'm not sure who thought Dracula = fresh smells but i'm a total sucker for this stuff.

Because of me, they have to put that disclaimer.
