Pod Stallions Minisode 3: Records!

We're back this week with another mini-sode and we're talking about one of our favourite subjects, haunting record shops and collecting, of course.

Mini-Sode was inspired by last weekend's Record Store Day festivities where we talk about experiences, vinyl, collecting philosophies, soundtracks, Doctor Who. Fawlty Towers, Power Records, The Ramones, Wild in the Streets,  GI Joe, Rusty Warren, mix tapes and overdue library items.

As always, we urge you to support your local record store and for gosh's sake, buy some physical media.

Hit us up on our facebook page with your feedback.

Cardboard and Vinyl charm

Can't say I'm a huge fan of either S.W.A.T or Emergency! but those vinyl & cardboard playsets are awesome and I totally want them.

That old timey computer....sigh....

PlaidStallions turns 11

This week marks the 11th anniversary of the launch of PlaidStallions. Truth be told, it was two days ago but life has been so bumpy lately, I totally forgot about it. That would have been a big mistake and here is why.

In eleven years of doing this, it has never felt like work and while it doesn't pay, it does pay back in all the wonderful (and often hilarious) feedback I receive from you folks. I look forward to doing this.

I cannot begin to properly explain how you all have impacted my life in a positive way and for that I'm very grateful today and this the reason that 11 years later I'm still scanning my smelly old catalogs.

Lining up some fun things for the remainder of the week including a new minisode podcast but I just wanted to start by giving praise where it's due. Thank you.

Superheroes and Apes in Japan

I was elated to find this ad full of Ourway Studios Superhero and Planet of the Apes merch in a Japanese issue of StarLog.

Especially mind warping is those Superhero stamp albums, which I totally had and collected as a kid. I wonder if they still accept orders......

Pod Stallions 52: Tom Baker

Episode 52 is a unique turn on our usual tribute shows as the subject we're speaking about is still alive and well.

We salute veteran actor Tom Baker in this month's show and celebrate not only his tenure as Doctor Who, where he cemented the character into pop culture but also his amazing turns in other films and television productions.

Some of the subjects we touch upon are Sinbad movies, Amicus horror, the mutations, action figures, Cluedo, Remington Steel, Dungeons and Dragons and George Segall as Robin Hood?

Plenty more content on the PodStallions Facebook page!

Palomino Dreaming

If I could wish one not produced toy into existence, it would likely be the Mego Palomino play set pictured here. I had a strong affection for the Black Hole as a kid and it continues to this day.

More on the Mego Black Hole line here.

Super-Fly Fashion: Styled the way you live!

As the saying goes, dress for the job you want, not the one you have.

Confession: I actually owned "A" at one point in my life and wore it to a party. I did not look Super Fly, more like a rejected "Doctor Who" from the 80s.

The shop window of Mego Dreams.....

I debated whether to put this here or on the Mego Museum but considering it's a vintage photo of a toy store in Hong Kong (and let's face it, this site has an obsession with such things).

This display of Mego Superhero items and Micronauts is my happy place, I drove my mother crazy looking for the 9.5" Robin on the far left. It looked just like Dick Grayson in the comics, it had to be mine.

Speaking of Mego, the annual convention known as Mego Meet is this June 16-17 in Skokie, Illinois. It's our last year in the Chicago area before we move to a new state, so last call mid west! Strong chance the guy at the front desk will be me, don't let that deter you.

Strong, Stretchy Dupont Nylon

Hard, early lessons like this made our fast food uniforms ten years later less difficult.

Star Wars in Japan

I recently found a 1978 copy of Starlog magazine from Japan, I find it adorable how little Star Wars merchandise there is but this is very, very early in the game.

Of particular note is the infamous "Archive Minatures" which I've never actually seen before. These little figures (called "dolls" in the ad) were cranked out super quick but Lucas very quickly unleashed "Darth CeaseandDesist".

Yup, for a very short time if you like Star Wars and figures this was the only game in town. They're kind of charming to be honest...

Spider-Pool! Spider-Pool!

Because the first Superhero you think of when swimming is mentioned is Spider-Man.

The Horror

The thought of stepping into that moist carpeting scares me more than the "Doctor Who" music did when I was five....

Dolls: Big Figures from Fantasy!

I recently came across this wonderful article about action figures circa 1977, it mentions Micronauts, Pulsar, Metal Man, Electroman, Stretch Monster, Shogun Warriors and their impact on the toy market place. It features interviews with not only toy buyers but toy makers from Hasbro, Mego, Zee Toys and Mattel.

Seeing as these are things that haunt my dreams 40 years later, I thought it might be of interest to all of you, read on after the jump!

The Soft Touch

Kenny's habit of gently whispering into Jim's ear placed considerable strain on their friendship.
