A couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to the Space Apes, a vintage series of action figures that seemed to be knocking off Mego's Planet of the Apes line but upon further reflection, these appear to be factory seconds poly bagged and sold off to make a quick buck, more after the jump:

If I only could choose one back in the day, this would be an all-day decision and the only thing I'm certain of is what I left behind would haunt me. Which would you have chosen?
I kind of swore off poster collecting here (I ran out of walls) but I couldn't resist this small one for the (officially licensed) Planet of the Apes circus shows that went on in the UK during 1974. This falls under the category of Mall Appearances and well, it's Planet of the Apes, so I'll find the wall space even if it means taking down my Marvel Alice Cooper comic.

This weekend, the missus and I did some exploring, hitting antique malls, visiting new towns/fairs and indulging in local cuisine (in this case a $10 grilled cheese sandwich). Normally one of us scores while the other doesn't, by the end of the day, neither of us had purchased anything but brownies.
At our last stop, this guy was facing me as I entered as if to say "It's a Brian day" and I happily scooped him up. As an apes collector, it's really rare to find anything like this in the wilds of Canada.
He makes a lovely addition to my Planet of the Apes display case that I installed not long ago.
Colin Baker Doctor Who Potato Chip Bags I've never heard of this promotion before, a series of Potato chips (or crisps) promoting the sixth Doctor's adventures. Who doesn't want a used Cheesy Corn Puff bag with Colin Baker on it?
Bootleg Mexican Mego Thor- I used to collect this stuff and honestly remember getting really pissed off at losing one of these. I think that's when I realized I was pursuing madness because I stopped after that. Yeah, they're terrible and crudely made but there is some sort of charm there that once had me...
Remco Creature and Phantom Makeup- I know it's just a box of makeup but that's the box art from the 9" Remco monsters and that's well...dreamy...
Captain Action Knock Off Figure- I love these knock off Superheroes wearing discarded clothes from Mego or Captain Action or in this case a fashion doll's leotard.
Planet of the Apes Sleeping Bag- I'm a sucker for stuff like this but I don't know how to display them and I rarely get invited to slumber parties anymore.
This week we take a look into my place and the new Planet of the Apes display case I put together. Most of the stuff I haven't discussed prior to this including some cool AHI rack toys, Mego figures from Mexico and Japan, Super 8 movies and model kits.

I posted some photos from last weekend's Burlington Toy Con on our facebook page but never showed my pickups. The show had plenty of cool stuff but i got out of it for under twenty bucks. The Apes cup was subject to an "I love your website" discount (which is rare but fills me with gratitude) and the Trek book and record is an absolute favourite from childhood.
This week we talk about my obsession with the Mighty Crusaders toys by Remco, no not the action figures themselves (not a big fan) but the amazing AHI rack toys that came out with them. Our focus this week is the incredible Planet of the Apes Adventure Playset by Amsco (A division of Milton Bradley) and these awesome 3D environments are entirely made of corrugated cardboard and hours of fun.
The folks at Amsco clearly had a lot of fun designing these because they are loaded with Easter eggs and nods to both the movies and the television series, it's one of the coolest Apes toys ever made!
I've just returned from my favourite toy convention of all time, Mego Meet and please excuse the sleepy voice but I haven't had much sleep! Thought it would be fun to go over the various items I picked up at this weekend's festivities, stuff from Planet of the apes, the Monster Squad, Stretch Armstrong, Godzilla, Kolchak the Night Stalker and hey I even bought a Mego figure from Buck Rogers. Astro Apes are cheap, blatant and totally charming rip-offs of our favourite Ape characters. So come meet Artemus, Myra and Dr. Zorma!

Original Santa Claus conquers the Martians one sheet- I'm a huge fan of this weird kids movie that honestly gets a bad rap for being terrible, it's a lot of fun actually and I watch it every Christmas, you should too.
Mego Planet of the Apes Treehouse Gift Set- This very rare combination of playset and dolls pushes all of my collector buttons and I want it to come home with me... Thanks for Reading, see you next week!
If there is anything more wonderfully absurd than a Dr. Zaius, machine gun strapped to his jacket popping a wheelie, I want to know what that is and have it.
Even the packaging is part of the play, I wish more toy companies did this.
My only regret when I see this toy is the thought that AHI could have done the exact same thing with the Universal Monsters that same year. What could have been....
