Sleeping Bag O Rama

This selection of sleeping bags from 1979 really taps into the pop culture at the time, it's a mish-mosh of TV Properties and popular brands. I'd have gone for the Black Hole at the time, you?

Marvel Water Pistols

I expect to see Spider-Man and Cap, bonus points for Sgt Fury despite it being a German pistol but Kid Colt Outlaw? That has to be one of his only pieces of merchandise ever. I don't remember him packing a Saturday night special but whatevs...

Latch Hooking, everybody's doing it!

Inspired by Superman the movie and "rug hooking fever" (common in 1979) I did attempt to do a rug of Superman's shield when I was eight. Unfortunately, I had the patience of an eight-year-old boy.

Spider-Man from France

I love exclusives like this 10" action figure that seems to have only been available in Japan and France.

For a more detailed look at this guy, check out this photo review we did a few years ago...

The 1978 AHI Toy Catalog

The undisputed king of the "Rack Toy" in the 1970s was Azrak-Hamway International or "AHI" for short.

They were riding high with past hits like Batman, Spider-Man, Star Trek, Space 1999 but 1978 saw them add James Bond 007, Farrah Fawcette, Donnie and Marie, the Walt Disney characters and their answer to Star Wars, Star Fleet!

It's a real blast down the pharmacy toy aisle, check it out here:

Les Super Heros!

This catalog page from France is like every other thought i had when i was eight. Nowadays I sadly think a lot about sandwiches more than Shogun Warriors....

Sales will climb with Spider-Man!

It's fitting that i found this ad as i recently discovered the destroyed remains of my  corgi Spider-Copter in my kid's room recently. It made no comic book sense and even at 7 years of age  I knew it was aerodynamically impossible but I thought it was the greatest vehicle ever.

More Corgi goodness:

Roaring Good Fun

It was a well known fact that Spider-Man and Gene Simmons were in a licensing competition that still stands to this day.

Caught in Spidey's Web!

This wonderful shot was sent into me by Twitter user @naturalbornheel who met Spidey at the Wonderland Mall (I've actually been there!) in San Antonio, TX during the Summer of '79.

This is the perfect type of photo I'm seeking for my next book project Mall of Justice, a love letter to the sensational personal appearances of our comic book, TV, movie and toy icons during the 1970s and 80s.

Whether it's Adam West at a car show, He-Man at a Toys R Us opening or an ersatz Chewbacca at a stereo store, Mall of Justice melds vintage photos with childhood recollection of these epic meetings.

While I will design andeventually publish the book (via PlaidStallions Press), it's a project we can all get involved with!

How you can get involved:
I'm looking for your photos and your recollections! Even if you've submitted them to the site before, I would likely need higher resolution and I'd want to
talk to you.

What am i looking for:

Appearances of costumed characters during the 1970s and 80s, be they from comicbooks (Batman, the Hulk) , cartoons (, toy lines (Masters of the Universe, GI Joe)  or movies (Planet of the Apes,Star Wars) , a date and place and a description of how you felt meeting theseiconic characters. Did you think they were real?

Does it have to
specifically be in a mall?:

HECK NO! Car shows, county fairs, grocery stores, heck I'd even accept birthday party shots. It's all fair game.

Thanks everyone for reading and I hope you'll share your experiences with me!

Spider-Pool! Spider-Pool!

Because the first Superhero you think of when swimming is mentioned is Spider-Man.

Crime-Busting Pays!

As ridiculous as the Hulk Jeep is, I think the Spider-Man copter is always the weirdest vehicle in the room.

Corgi Spiderbuggy & Green Goblin

I thought I'd devote today to my favourite diecast vehicle of my youth. A piece of Spider-Man merchandise that makes absolutely no sense but to my nine year old brain just felt oh so right, the super awesome Spiderbuggy with Green Goblin! More after the jump!
