Pod Stallions 45 : The Monkees

We're thrilled to be back recording PodStallions after some truly turbulent times.

Today's show is all about our mutual love for the Monkee's, although neither of us were alive for the show's original run we were both hooked on reruns and records during the middle 1970s.

We kick off the show playing catch up and discussing Jason's adventures at San Diego Comic Con, including a chance meeting with SCTV's Dave Thomas and being on  the Famous Monsters of Filmland panel.

Then we get into the Monkee's, our early impressions, favourite bits of merchandise, songs and episodes. We even get into the disastrous "New Monkee's" series that should just be forgotten.

Hit us up on our facebook page and tell us what your favourite Monkees song and merch is!

Show Notes:

Kenner Give-A-Show

One of my favourite memories of a kid was my neighbour's older sister gleefully showing "The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan" (a cartoon I'd never heard of) to a bunch of us in their basement one rainy day. I always think of Sherry when I see these things.

Bed Time: A New Hope

It's commonplace now but I think it's really cool that they made this design for boys and girls. I'm married to a Star Wars fan who was denied many cool toys because "it was considered a boy's thing".

Stripes & Plaids

They should never be in the same place, that could create a chain reaction that would destroy the world!

Super Babies!

The Amsco Super Babies never warmed to me as a superhero loving kindergartener, I was well into Mego action figures by this point and Shazam's inaccurate red hair bugged me even then. As an adult, I think they're one of the most charming bits of 70s Superhero merch.

I'm pleased top announce that things have almost returned to normal here and I'll be updating the site again. Thanks to everyone for the kindness.

Please Stand By

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to update this week. Please accept these dynamic prints as a test pattern. We'll return when life improves.

Keep it funky people.

Official Batman Battery Operated Zoom Cycle

I lucked out recently and found this awesome piece of AHI Batman goodness locally for a decent price. So, I thought it would be wonderful time to showcase it a little here. More after the jump!

Ideal R-R-R-Raw Power

I've mentioned it before but my parent's denying me this toy for "safety issues" never ceases to amuse me. Think I'll call them up and bug them about it again.

I would have probably broken it in an hour though...

Battle of the Planets Tricycle

Well, my pal Dave over at ToyNerd (go check it out, I'll wait) succeeded in two things 1) Showing me something I've never seen before and 2) Totally making me want a girl's bicycle!

Follow me after the jump for this awesome Battle of the Planets piece.

Land of the Giants Space Sled

You may not remember the Space Sled on Land of the Giants, that's because Remco (king of recycling toys) re-purposed this toy from the Gerry Anderson "Super Car" series a few years earlier.

Star Wars at Osco

Man, this image is simple but packs a powerful memory punch to Christmas time 1979, that second wave of SW figures was pretty exciting.  I may get it put on a T Shirt.

Popy World Heroes Catalog 1980

I recently acquired the 1980 Popy Catalog and it's a "Treasury Edition" sized book that hates scanners, it's also delightful.

While I don't have the time to scan the whole thing, I thought it important to showcase one of my favourite toy lines the Popy World Heroes.

I honestly wonder if that middle carrying case exists...
