Universal, and not so Universal Halloween Die Cuts!

Please enjoy another guest post by my pal Matt, who will take us to school on vintage Halloween decorations- BrAin.

Greetings boils and ghouls!

Today's post features some of the rarest, best, and most sought after and valuable Halloween die-cuts ever made based on the universal monsters.

Some of them are solid cutouts, and others are jointed figures. All of them are from that wonderful period of the late 1970s and early 1980s when, in my humble opinion, the golden age of Halloween die-cuts was occurring.

This is not the full extent of my Halloween die-cut collection. But I decided to limit today to just the die cuts that have a universal monster connection. Enjoy!

1) Eureka die cuts Eureka was a company famous for its holiday decorations, they would make cardboard die cuts as well as tissue paper accordion decorations for Valentines, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, Christmas, and of course, Halloween.

More Super 8 Monsters

This year my collection of Super 8 Monster movies has increased 300 fold (mainly cause i started with like one last year). While I planned to only buy these in the wild, some good deals on our vintage toys facebook group combined with Rodan coming from a generous friend makes me a happy boy.

I'm picky what monster movies I get on Super 8 but honestly Toho, Hammer and Harryhausen are everything right about the genre to me.

Pod Stallions 56: Hammer Films

Episode 56 is all about the films by England's Hammer studios and we honestly try to mention all of them including the one's we haven't seen!

Our exhaustive retrospective talks about all the sexy vampires, frankenstein monsters, mummies, zombies that the studio that dripped blood could produce!

Some of the sidetrack subjects we touch upon are action figures, Amicus movies,  Doctor Who, Thriller and i think Jason mentions a little film called "Blade Runner 2049".

Topps Shock Theatre Trading Cards

I'm not a huge gum card guy but Monster cards are an obvious exception that's why this set of cards sent in by Matt make me smile, I'll let him explain:

Given the fact that the great Christopher Lee passed away this last year, I could think of nothing more fitting than this for my final Halloween item-- a superb bit of 70s monster goodness: Hammer Horror trading cards from Topps released in 1976!

Yes, believe it or not, Topps released a set of Shock Theater trading cards based exclusively on Hammer films. I am not a huge trading card guy, but I go gaga for monster cards, and these are some of the best.

Comprised mostly of stills from "Dracula Has Risen from the Grave", "Horror of Frankenstein", "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed," "Taste the Blood of Dracula," "Scars of Dracula," "Dracula AD:1972", and "The Satanic Rites of Dracula," feast your eyes on some of the most gory cards ever marketed to 70s kids, complete with Cracked Magazine style jokes:

Close up of some cards. Completing a set of these is an expensive proposition, but well worth it.

Here are a pair of card backs with jokes on them... Shocking Laffs indeed!

Thanks Matt, now I'm off to Ebay!

Pod Stallions Episode 31: Christopher Lee

This month as we lost one of the most iconic character actors to walk this earth in the form of Christopher Lee.

This episode tries to discuss as much as possible about the man and his exhaustive career, the hammer horror days, James Bond, Space:1999, Captain Invincible, Starship Invasions and that time he fought Captain America.

We, of course, digress into a discussion about action figures, Doctor Who, Peter Cushing and much, much more.
