Did anyone get a Gold Cylon Mailer?

My friend John sent me an email the other day asking me about this, one of his "holy grails". He claims he sent away for this as a kid but a got a Hot Wheels car and an apology. Since then he's been looking for one in the mailer box to fill that void (i can relate to that) but it's never come up.

When I started thinking about I realized I've seen them carded and of course loose but in all my years I've never come across one in the mailer box.

So question to you all is, did you or do you have a gold Cylon in the mailer box?

Top Five Things on Ebay this Week

Original Santa Claus conquers the Martians one sheet- I'm a huge fan of this weird kids movie that honestly gets a bad rap for being terrible, it's a lot of fun actually and I watch it every Christmas, you should too.

Battlestar Galactica Wall Calendar- Cause you never know when it's going to be 1979 again.

James Bond Secret Ear Phone Wrist Watch- Were I a rich man, this would be great Christmas present for a certain podcast partner.

A complete set of French Battle of the Planets figures- Sure, they're on open cards BUT THEY"RE ALL KINDS OF AWESOME and circumvent any collector OCD.

Mego Planet of the Apes Treehouse Gift Set- This very rare combination of playset and dolls pushes all of my collector buttons and I want it to come home with me...

Thanks for Reading, see you next week!

Space-Age Spaceware

I'm loving this article from a 1979 issue of Starlog highlighting some of the cooler space age toys coming out that year. The only bummer to this is that two foot Galactica never made it to market but seriously should have....

The Great Sci-Fi Toy Slump of 1979

It's really hard to believe but in 1979, Star Wars and other Sci-Fi related toys hit a major slump. So much so that many retailers considered it all a "fad" and stopped ordering new items.

This article taken from a "Toys, Hobbies and Crafts" magazine interviews major buyers and the vice president of Mego about the then-uncertain future of  space toys. Surely Star Trek the Motion Picture and the Black Hole were going to kick it back into high gear!

The recent release of two new space movies, with a third on the way for the spring, means kids will again be looking into space toys in droves, say manufacturers.

But retailers are leery about space, since sales dropped off as much as 30% for some last year on licensed and nonlicensed space toys.
The retailer's attitude for 1980s a "wait and see" philosophy. Most are hoping that Star Trek, The Black Hole and the Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, will rejuvenate sales.

Still, buyers say they plan to go slow in placing orders for sci-fi toys, depending upon the interest.

TH & C spoke with representatives from Heck's, Winns Stores, Singer and Co., Sprouse-Reitz Co.,Toy Fair, Kenner and Mego. This is what they had to say:

Mattel Battlestar Galactica Action Figure Commercial

Happy Friday!

Here is another commercial transfer, this it the original Mattel Battlestar Galactica Action Figure commercial from 1979, a new transfer of the original reel.

It's kind of ironic that this features mainly the 'peg warming" characters like Imperious leader, Ovion and Daggit. Also, why does Starbuck talk like a robot?

Happy Friday, here is another one from the recently digitized archive, this is the revised for the Mattel Battlestar Galactica toy line that clearly states the missiles no longer fire. We all know why....

Superheroes and Sci-Fi

One section of any wish book that I love is the "other" action figure pages in the era of Star Wars. There is a lot of great stuff on this page!

While my time with the Mego Superheroes decreased sharply in 1979, I still viewed them like old friends. I still kinda do....

Mattel Battlestar Galactica Viper Launcher Commercial

For some reason I've never uploaded this commercial to YouTube, yet I transferred it ages ago. A cleverly repurposing of their "Flying Aces" toys, the Viper Launch station was a really cool way to play Battlestar Galactica.

Battlestar Galactica: The Big One for 79/80?

This is an article from a UK toy industry magazine, I love stuff like this, nobody wanted to get caught with their pants down like they all did with Star Wars. As a result,  Battlestar Galactica was taken very seriously by retailers, at least for a little while.

1979 GLJ Battlestar Galactica toy Catalog

In 1979, GLJ toys (one of my favourite obscure toy companies from the era) did what a lot of toy makers did and grabbed a piece of Battlestar Galactica in the hopes it was the next Star Wars.

Their specialty was inflatable toys, even vehicles for the action figures which is just awesome.

It wasn't quite the bonanza they were looking for and I'm not sure half these inflatable toys ever got made. It's a fun trip nonetheless, check out the 1979 GLJ BattleStar Galactica Catalog here.

Battlestar Galactica Inflatable Viper

I recently discovered this in a catalog for toymaker GLJ, who specialized in things like bop bags and inflatable Barbie Furniture.

Turns out they had the Battlestar Galactica license and planned a number of things, including this inflatable Colonial Viper that would have fit the 12" Mattel figures.

While some GLJ BSG merchandise made it to shelves, I'm pretty sure this never saw retail, which is a big shame although I think making one for the 3 3/4" figures might have been the safer bet.....

1979 Craftmaster Poster Art Catalog

Poster and marker sets were one of my favourite ways to spend an afternoon as a kid (cause that's about how long the markers would last). I also recently have become invested in tracking down all the ones I had as a kid.

Craftmaster had all the best licenses in the late 70s which included Star Wars and arch rival Battlestar Galactica, Super hunk John Travolta, Fantasy Island and Love Boat.

I'd also like to add if you have the Fantasy Island set for sale, CONTACT ME!!!!!

Comic Ad: Battlestar Galactica Free Gold Cylon Promo

I was pretty bummed when I saw this as a kid, mostly because the packaging from my Battlestar Figures had been tossed a good three months before....

Battlestar Galactica Poster Art

Please give a warm welcome to my latest obsession, 70s poster art sets. As a young lad I ruined many of these with my lack of both talent and patience.

I've been secretly admiring these on Ebay until one bout of sleeplessness resulted in a surprise parcel in the form of this set and it is a beauty!

Seriously I don't remember buying this...

Look at how beautiful the art is on this thing, you don't need to colour it all.

One thing I want to point out is, this is how they suggest you color  these pages.

Aaaaand these are the tools they give you to accomplish this goal.

Colouring Book Theatre: Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica: Adventure Activiy Book by Grosset and Dunlap

I stumbled on this book over the holidays and that's good because i didn't know it even existed prior to that.

The artwork is credited to Tony Tallarico, a busy guy in comics and coloring books in the 60s and 70s (most famously for drawing those Dell "monsters as superheroes" comics which I am a fan of) who is quite capable of good work.

I'm really not sure what happened here but I have several theories.

Grab your crayons and still suit and join me after the jump

Battlestar Galacticup

I found this bit of weirdness recently at the flea market, I can safely say Lorne Green did not approve licensed materials....

Cylon Voice Control Helmet

As far as I can tell, this toy never saw release. It was offered by a division of Mattel known as Concept 2000 and it gave kids the ability to talk like a cyclon when placed upon their heads. I'm a pretty casual BSG fan but the fact that this didn't get made kind of makes me a little mad.
