Star Trek Happy Meal Box

On my way home from the printers picking up samples of Toy-Ventures (coming this week) I stopped into The Toy Society, a retro shop on my way home.

When I saw this on the shelf, it had to come home with me. Fortunately for me, it was reasonable because my reaction to it certainly wasn't, it was like seeing an old friend.

These Happy Meals seem to represent a good time for me as a kid, where everything was going great and somehow that feeling of overwhelming optimism I had as a kid is now connected to this piece of cardboard.

Honestly, I felt a swirl of emotion, things were going great at school, I had tons of friends, I had discovered Judy Bloom and Crestwood Monster books, I was really quite pleased with my fourth-grade existence.

I don't want to get all "woo-woo" but you go through a lot of self-doubts when you start something like a new publication and before I got to the Toy Society, my head, already woozy from the fumes of printer's ink was also filled with the worry that I was suffering from the "Dunning Kruger" effect.

And that is why I was so excited to see what is essentially a food wrapper from a restaurant I only now eat at begrudgingly (breakfast excepted), for that minute it was a reminder of positive times and it had to be mine.

Also, it reminds me how EXCITED I was to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture, that movie's gonna rock!

Sleeping Bag O Rama

This selection of sleeping bags from 1979 really taps into the pop culture at the time, it's a mish-mosh of TV Properties and popular brands. I'd have gone for the Black Hole at the time, you?

A 1970s McDonalds Costume Catalog

My friend Justin sent this to me yesterday and I can say without hyperbole that it's the greatest thing I'll ever see. If you've ever wondered how much "the Hamburglar" cost or if there was a checklist for Ronald McDonald's magic tricks, your quest is at an end today.

$975 for the Hanburglar, do you take Paypal?

When our local McDonald's opened our Ronald had a thick Ukrainian accent, leading many of us to believe that Ronald was supposed to sound like that.

Bless you Justin for this amazing look behind the curtain.

Don't forget to join our new facebook group.

The hamburger happy clown invades Canada

Chris AKA Mysterion the Mind Reader sent in this awesome shot from late 1970s in conjunction with a new McDonalds opening at in the plaza at Duffferin and Lawrence in Toronto. Chris recollects that he "lost his mind" when this event occured.

I remember being super fond of the McDonalds and Burger King characters back then as well, funny how well this promotion worked.

Look for more from Chris in the very near future.

Remco McDonaldland Characters

remco mcdonalds
This 1976 Toy Trade ad for Remco's McDonaldland characters seems a little odd to me. While I was fond of the McDonald's commercials and had many birthdays at my local franchise, I clearly remember not understanding why there were action figures. Well made action figures at that.

However, some folks on the forums have told me these figures are very happy memories of these and honestly, that play set is pretty funky cool.

The 1977 REMCO Toys Catalog

remco batman toys

Remco's name was purchased in 1974 by Azrak Hamway, a successful manufacturer of rack toys. AHI used the Remco brand to sell a more upscale toy but one that still utilized the many licenses integral to their core business.

1977 saw the introduction of Mickey Mouse to the fold and more Superhero (especially Batman) related products which would eventually become the bread and butter of the company for the rest of the decade..

Thanks to Steve F. for these marvelous scans also a person with powers.click on the images for pages with descriptions:

1976 Remco Toys Catalog

Remco was a division of Azrak Hamway and while AHI made more of the dimestore "Impulse' items, the Remco brand was used to promote toys of a higher quality. In 1976, the company attempted to infiltrate the action figure category (the McDonalds characters), Games (Magic Hat) along with their usual children's role play items such as Star Trek and Space:1999 utilty belts.

Check out the 1976 Remco Catalog for more goodness.

And be sure to check out the Earthquake Tower Playset, this is a somewhat morbid toy no doubt inspired by the Irwin Allen movies of the era....
