1985 Remco Toys Catalog

Remco Toys was in tenth year of being under the ownership of Azrak Hamway toys  and 1985 finds them having a wonderful year of creating some memorable lines that aped the popular themes of the decade.

This fantastic catalog covers such great lines like Conan the Barbarian, The Mighty Crusaders, Zybots, Ninjas, Warlord and the Pirates of the Galaxseas just to name a few.

It's a fun trip into lower cost and rack toys items, won't you please enjoy the 1985 Remco Toys Catalog?

Hasbro on Parade

Sadly, Jerry Lewis was never part of the GI Joe Adventure Team, his presence was to promote a series of board games. What a missed opportunity to have sets like "Search for the Golden Ladieeeeeeee!"

Super 8 Apes

I was really happy to run into this Planet of the Apes Super 8 short recently, I have a small but growing collection of these titles but Apes is a biggie for me.

Super 8 films will always remind me of my local library and birthday parties, I always perked up when you saw a projector at your friend's house.

The store had more than one but cash is limited, so I chose Beneath because it gave me nightmares as a kid!

I hope to track down the rest soon, maybe even some of them fancy color ones. A boy can dream!

1979 Palitoy Commander Power Catalog (Super Joe)

In 1976, Hasbro Toys had abandoned the G.I. Joe action figure , the following year Joe returned 4 inches shorter and now in the future as "Super Joe" which lasted two brief years.

Hasbro's UK distributor Palitoy (Who was still busy selling 12" Joes as Action Man) decided to release Super Joe into the United Kingdom. Like a lot of their product lines, Palitoy did a massive rebranding of the concept. Joe became Commander Power and he was only joined by two other characters at the time, Gor King of the Terrons and the Shield. Judging by how hard it is to find the toys from this line, it's fair to summize that it wasn't terribly successful. However, it is quite nice to look at:

Check out the Palitoy Commander Power Catalog here.

Show 'N" Tell

Gabriel's Show N Tell came out when I was ten years old, so I'm not surprised I didn't notice it back then, I was all about action figures at that point.

A really novel approach to the "Book and Record" format I loved, I can't imagine it had a long life at retail with affordable VCRs looming closer and closer....

Palitoy Talking Dalek Speaks

I was rather excited to reunite with a working Palitoy talking Dalek this past month.

This toy was my first "Big boy collector mail order purchase" at the yonge age of 13, I innocently sent $25 (US!) to a classifed ad in the back of Starlog.

The next three months of waiting were nerve wracking as I largely assumed it would never come but three months later, it did arrive and was glorious.

While I did sell that one for food money in college, it sparked a life long love of collecting and getting packages.

Below is a video I've thrown together to hear him speak and as a bonus, I threw in the original commercial.

Welcome home old friend.

Mego invades the UK

This picture, from the 1977 Palitoy Bradgate Catalog is so much like my childhood (and adult dreams) it's scary. I love a world where the Star Trek crew can mingle with the Fantastic Four and take on Doctor Zaius.

You can see the whole thing at the Mego Museum.

Le Dentiste

Found the French version of the Play-Doh Dr Drill N' Fill (blandly named "Le Dentiste") in a catalog and I'm still amazed this was a thing. How many kids didn't just instantly get dark with this?

General Spidrax at Toys R Us

It doesn't get more 80s than this does it? The badguy from the Sectaurs meeting a kid with a Ghostbusters Tee shirt!

Reminder: This is the kind of thing I'm looking for in my next book "Mall of Justice".

How you can get involved: I'm looking for your photos and your recollections! Even if you've submitted them to the site before, I would likely need higher resolution and I'd want to talk to you.

What am i looking for: Appearances of costumed characters during the 1970s and 80s, be they from comic books (Batman, the Hulk) , cartoons (, toy lines (Masters of the Universe, GI Joe)  or movies (Planet of the Apes, Star Wars) , a date and place and a description of how you felt meeting these iconic characters. Did you think they were real?

Does it have to specifically be in a mall:
HECK NO! Car shows, county fairs, grocery stores, heck I'd even accept birthday party shots. It's all fair game.

Pod Stallions 51: Sci-Fi Sitcoms

Episode 51 has Jason and Brian discussing the world of (mostly short lived) Sci-Fi sitcoms, we touch on everything from the shows that predate us like "My Living Doll" to the best our childhood had to offer like "Quark", "Holmes and Yo-Yo" and the 70s phenomenon  that was "Mork and Mindy".

We speak about such highs such as "Red Dwarf" and "Futurama" but also have fun with the lows like  "Homeboys in Outer Space".

It's a tight 65 minutes of deep sitcom nerdery, buckle your space belts, gather all your shabdibs, we're using the Source.

Plenty more content on the PodStallions Facebook page!

Land of the Lost Sound 'N Action Scenes

Here are the Land of the Lost action figures you never got.

Buried in the pages of the 1976 LJN catalog, these "Sound N Action" figures are very similiar to the Mattel Heroes in Action (of which LJN was knocking off that year) in that the figures are attached to a base.

As cool and mindblowing as this is, I'm a bit upset that these never got made.

Oh what might have been, might have been.

Space:1999 Comlock Communicators

LJN really knocked these out of the park, they looked a lot like the show props and they actually worked.

I bought a set at a Star Trek show in the 1980s and I remember the woman I purchased them made a comment to me that people would never wear computers on their belts.

Spotlight: Pinmates U.S.S Enterprise by Bif Bang Pow!

Time for a rare un-boxing and photo review of a modern toy. While I mainly try to avoid modern stuff, some of it embraces my inner child wishlist that it demands to be purchased.

Such is the case with Pin Mates which mix the vintage Fisher Price little people with the hottest licenses today into something that just makes me deliriously happy.

I had a very happy childhood playing with my Sesame Street set and an even happier second one letting my kid's play with it (I may have gotten heavily involved with that play time as well)

Today, I'll be looking at the first Pin Mates play set and they've started with a bang, the U.S.S Enterprise from classic Star Trek, beam down after the jump!

The Coleco Way!

This is one from my collection that I adore, a toy fair sales reel for Coleco never meant to be seen by the public.  This reel promotes stuff like electronic football, table top hockey and ping pong and features the greatest spokesman and sideburns we will see in this life time. Enjoy!

Star Base Command Tower

I won't lie to you, I would play with this thing right now were it in front of me. We truly lived in a golden age of generic space toys in the last 1970s.

Also, those astronaut figures were everywhere!

Columbo on Moonbase Alpha

I owe this incredibly strange bit of merchandise to my pal Corey, who recent acquired it. A Japanese publication which seems to combine Space:1999 stories with Columbo? I fail to see the connection but also am happy it exists.

GI Joe Returns

This rather mysterious trade ad from December 1981 is the first thing I can find that heralds the return of the GI Joe brand to toy stores. I don't recall seeing the figures much before March of '82, where 11 year old me pined for Kung Fu grip but still fell in love with the comic book.
