Action Figures 1982

1982 gave you your choice of Lucasfilm action figures, Spielberg action figures, or if you were feeling particularly adventurous Lucasfilm/Spielberg action figures. Such variety!

The Empire Strikes Back Again!

Seeing as it's #1 at the box office again, let's relive when it was #1 in the toy aisle as well. It's hard to believe but prior to the release of Empire, the sales dip of SF toys had many publications asking is it all just a fad

Steve Austin's Arch Enemy Dr. Kromedome!

Dr. Kromedome was a clever creation by department store chain Montgomery Wards and Mego to make up for the lack of villains for the Kenner Six Million Dollar Man line. He was totally unlicensed, cost the same as Steve and quite silly looking, like some sort of Cyborg Pimp and that's why I love him so much.

Here is a video I did about Dr. KromeDome for the MegoMuseum.

Kenner Return of the Jedi 1983

Christmas of 1983 would be the first one where I didn't get a Star Wars toy in well, five years. After Jedi, I couldn't help feel like it was over, and well, going into the eighth grade was also a huge factor. I still fondly looked at this stuff on the shelves.

The best picture you will see today

My friend Ken shared with me this wonderful photo from around 1980 I suspect. I wish more of our parents took photos like this. Ken grew up not far from me and we can't ascertain if this is a WH Smith store of the Dominion Playworld in the Scarborough Town Center.

Either way, it's just glorious and I love the Mego Micronaut cameo.

If you have photos like this and want to share, PLEASE send them on down.

Toy-Ventures: Halloween Costume Countdown

Toy-Ventures this week is a look at five classic Halloween costumes from my collection, some are weird, none are scary but they're all infused in some magical 1970s pop culture goodness.

Toy-Ventures 20- My Star Wars Collection

I thought I'd do something different and talk about my Star Wars collection, most people I know are surprised I have any SW stuff and well, I have a lot of rules about collecting this stuff that I almost always follow. Do you have collecting rules you follow? Let's hear them in the comments section.

Toy-Ventures 7: Robot Man with Four Faces

This week's installment of Toy-Ventures is all about the wonderful and weird Maskatron knock off from France called "Robot Man with Four Faces" one of the more blatant (and charming) rip-offs I've ever encountered as a collector.

RC R2

I had the remote control R2D2 as a kid, it stopped walking pretty quickly but it was still good to use with the 12" dolls so I was content, also it still made it's beeping noise much to mother's chagrin. She once threatened to throw it out of the station wagon!

Exciting Toys from the Star Wars Series

This nice ad from Zayres (wish i had the whole flyer) is from Christmas 1983 and I'm guessing by that point, I had jumped off the wonderful train that was Star Wars.

I still read the Marvel comic mind you but I honestly don't recognize or remember that mini-rig or the plush Ewoks at all. I hope it brings joy to those that do.

Star Wars Action Favorites!

Even though I wasn't really into Return of the Jedi as a kid, I did love that Kenner was still putting out the original 12 figures during that period. It was like running into old friends...

Rebel Command Center

Two thoughts: One, Darth Vader and the Bounty Hunters look like they're going "Hooray!" which is probably what they did at the end of "Empire".

Two, the Rebel Command center looks like minutes of play.

1980 Toys R Us Flyer featuring Mego, Mork and the Kenner Alien

It's sadly looking like the end for Toys R Us in the United States, so let's go and focus on when it was a growing company that made for an amazing experience.

This Flyer from 1980 is so jam-packed with late 1970s pop culture that every page seems to have some Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman merchandise tucked in there somewhere, it's a real trip!

Kenner Alien, He's a Cutie?

I've desperately trying to scan in a newly acquired Toys R Us Flyer from 1980 for Friday (fingers crossed). I've been so busy with it that I only just noticed the Kenner Alien in there!

Such an iconic and coveted toy just regulated to the corner, it brings you back to the reality that the big chap wasn't really a big hit when he made his toy shelf debut.

Anyway, consider this a Toys R Us tease.
