Why I love Star Trek toys

Mego Star Trek

I was first introduced to Star Trek through my older sister, who forced me to watch the reruns on CFTO every Saturday morning because of her crush on William Shatner. She was going to marry him, she never lived that down.

To me, Star Trek was a cool saturday morning show, it was a great follow up from Land of the Lost, which was on earlier in the day, the rocks looked to be the same sort of styrofoam. I still like it on that level, it's a fun show.

When I spied the Mego figures pictured above at a dominion playworld circa 1975, that was all this five year old could take. I still have my bridge crew and I wish I could remember all the adventures I had.

What's interesting is the back story of these toys, while Remco was the first to merchandise Trek in the 60's, they kind of phoned it in by placing the trek logo on existing space toys.

It wasn't until 1974 when Neal Kublan convinced his bosses at Mego to make toys based on a show that had been cancelled 4 years previously, that things really kicked off.

Neal's hunch was right and the resulting wave of "Me too' products that followed were a result of the big splash Mego made with their Trek line.

If I were a rich man, I'd fill a room full of the stuff I'm going to feature this week, when Star Trek was cool.....

Big Jim and his Mexican Equivalent

Mexican versions of Big Jim

Seeing as the P.A.C.K comic was a big hit this week, I thought I'd close the week with a funky look at the world of Mexican Big Jims.

Much like Mexican Mego figures, the toy companies took creative license and in my opinion, created some of the coolest figures around.

Next week we'll be showcasing the early 70's Star Trek craze, have a great weekend!

What Color was your fridge?

reminds me of the dump

Whatever happened to white? Your choices in this 1974 offering are mustard Yellow, Copper and of course, Ovocado Green. I seem to remember having a brown fridge to go along with the orange flower print wall paper, that is also in this catalog.

part four of the Big Jim PACK comic

Today we conclude the Big Jim Wolf PACK comic with the final chapter, Big Jim and the Pack stopped Zorak from taking over the world but will they be able to stop Zorak's attack on the President?

Beware the Man-Robe!

welcome to my santuary
This outfit might as well include a large sign that says "I'm having a mid life crisis!" Either that or you're really into Cosplay to attempt the "post apocalyptic" look. Looks like the kind of dude who takes you for a ride in his new dune buggy and then invites you back to his hot tub. Remember, he's nekkid under there.

part 2 of the PACK comic

Our Big Jim comic continues as the Pack swings into action as Zorak Strikes!

Nope! Try Again!

It's probably best I just keep silent on this....

The World's Coolest Man

Just look at this guy! He just kind of oozes confidence doesn't he? Let's not forget about his amazing air of mystery surrounding him. Is he a spy? An International Playboy? A substitute science teacher? The Stand in for Jonathan Harris? I guess we'll never know....

Click here to see part one of the Big Jim Pack comic

PlaidStallions Bonus Feature! I've put the Mattel Big Jim Wolf P.A.C.K promotional comic on the site, starting today with Chapter 1: Track of the Pack. This is a fun nonsensical product of the 70's Marvel Bullpen, hope you like it.

Sesame Street Records and Finger Puppets

Kind of a mash up today, I had two great topics and just decided to put them together, first is the remanents of my Sesame Street Record collection, I swear my mom bought every single one of these, here are some of my favourite covers.
sesame street monsters

This Monster cover has to be my favourite, just the colours alone make it something I'd display on my wall (if i had the luxury of wall space)

sesame street cast members

I like this cast record, I wonder if as a kid I realized that it was "Old Gordon" on the cover?

grover sings the blues

Grover Sings the Blues, the "Framptons Come Alive" for the playground set

sesame street finger puppets

Lastly I wanted to add these cool Sesame Street Finger puppets, I have a friend who collects these (Hi Scott!) and he knows way more about these things than i do. There are tons of characters and an exhaustive supply of packaging variants. More on these later, trust me....

Hope you've liked Sesame Street Week, if you did, you're in luck. I have enough material to start my own Sesame blog! Thanks for reading.

Fisher Price Little People And Sesame Street : A Perfect Marriage

the fisher price sesame street clubhouse

In my previous rant about how cool the Fisher Price Sesame Street Playset was someone on the PlaidStallions MySpace Page brought the clubhouse to my attention.
Although nothing ever remotely resembling it appeared on the show, the clubhouse was an awesome toy. It's trap doors; secret doorways and weird moving sidewalk are part of some very happy memories for me. I was one of the millions of children who broke the tire swing. My kids play with the clubhouse almost daily as well, a really nice testament to this lines durability.

the fisher price sesame street little people

In looking for a decent pic, I found this great shot of the packaging for the Sesame Street little people. I must have seen this before as I had all of the figures but I honestly don't remember this. I'll say it again, as much as I am a Megohead, this stuff rocks my toy geek world.

No Elmo in sight, Hooray!

sesame street talking dolls

I'm all over these cool pullstring Sesame characters from 1978. I still have my original Ernie in my office, he still talks! One of the best thing he says is "You've got cold hands!"
I don't remember these other characters coming out but my sesame street days were over by '78. Well, I still watched the show but didn't admit it to friends......

Bert and Ernie : The Original Shock Jocks

Bert says go sit on the Sybian

I can't get over how many Sesame Street transister radios were available in the 70's, talk about a selection. Bert and Ernie's infamous radio career skidded to a halt when Bert "did the pigeon" in a catholic church.

Ernie goes rock hunting, love it!

Sesame Street Puppets, seems like the right way to kick things off.

Sesame Street Puppets

I love these hand puppets especially that off model version of the count, looks nothing like him. The other interesting thing is that Big Bird doll in the corner, it still seems to be based on the early "Pinhead" version of Big Bird that frightened children.

Sesame Street Week on Plaidstallions

In anticipation of the Sesame Street Old School DVD I've put together some cool old and occasionally weird Sesame Street stuff for this week.

No real reason to post today but I phoned in this crummy graphic!

1975 Toys R Us Newspaper Circular

a 1975 toys r us newspaper flier
A fun thing today, the 1975 Toys R Us Flier from the New Jersey area. Very few people kept these things so it's a rare glimpse.
It's cool variety from Mego Superheroes to Sesame Street to Jimmie Walker, check it out here.

Man from Atlantis : The lost toys

Man From Atlantis toys at Plaid Stallions

If you are a child of the 70's, chances are you remember the 1978 TV Series "The Man From Atlantis", it began with a series of well done TV movies that made for much conversation on the playground. It soon became a weekly series but the magic left quickly.

What is not commonly known is that Kenner had planned a toy line based on this series, which no doubt was squashed when the series was found floating in the Aquarium, so to speak.

Now, exclusive to Plaid Stallions, we bring you the original Steven Hodges Production sketches for the proposed Kenner Man From Atlantis toy line.

The Sunshine Family of Doom!

Mattel's Sunshine Family toys were the first playthings I remember hating, it was almost instant. I always thought it had to do with their sacharine soaked appearance but when I was doing some scans for an upcoming feature, it dawned on me....

The Sunshine family is a cult! Look at those huge, glazed eyes, the hollow smiles almost carved on their faces. These dolls were selling flowers and cruising the college campuses in Megoville and nobody was the wiser. Well, I'm on to you "Reverend Steffie" and I plan to bring you down!

This theory also explains the "Sunshine Family Compound" playset........

Sesame Street Play Set: Greatest 70's toy ever?

greatest toy ever

While doing a feature I found this pic and it occurred to me how much this toy rocked. I mean, it's a perfect play set! Accurate to the show, comes with cool props and it's indestructable! I still have mine and it gets tons of use every day. Not by me anymore, mind you. Thank you Fisher Price!
As a side bonus, Old School Sesame Street is getting released on DVD , time to get some preorders in! Hopefully it includes this little gem!

Be sure to check out the Megomuseum blog today, the feature today is Logan's Run.

PlaidStallions week of toys begins: Action Man 1980 Toyfair display!

its toy week at plaid stallions

Thought it would be fun to have a week devoted to toy stuff, kicking it off with a little seen picture of the Action Man toy fair display from Palitoy. This is from the 1980 UK Toyfair. For those who don't know, Action Man is the UK equvilant of GI Joe.

Across town, check out the Megomuseum and their new King Kong page, showcasing the cool toys made for the 1977 remake.

DVD Reviews : FIlmation Cartoons and Post Nuke titles

I kind of went hog wild and bought some DVDs, so I thought I'd justify the purchase by reviewing them on the site. Filmation Cartoons and Italian post nuke movies are the things that make my heart go pitter patter:

Space Seninels Freedom Force

The Filmation Flash Gordon DVD

Post Apocalyptic Triple Feature

Ha ha ha ha ha Hunh?

oh so clever

Yeah that's right Woody Woodpecker bikini briefs, oh that's a subtle pun which is completely confuesed by the Winnie Woodpecker pair for girls. For some odd reason, Droopy bikini briefs never caught on.

And that concludes "Super Sexy Underpants Week", which was not super, nor sexy (OK I rubbed one out to the girl on Monday but i was just bored) but it did have some underpants. Next week is all cool toys and I'm working on a week of Halloween stuff as well.

His and Her Bikini Briefs

ewwwwwwwwww

I know these things are brand new but they already look filthy. I used to have to clean a parking lot when i was younger and these were the kinds of things you'd find all bunched up in the corner.

The Lonely Lady.....

For years, this image has been a favourite of mine. The woman gives off that vibe of the neglected housewife who turns the teen boys in the neighbourhood into men.

My neighbourhood at the time was mostly Septurgenarians, I had to settle for watching a bad copy of My Tutor or the Channel 47 dirty Italian movie on Saturday.....

Charlies Angels Dolls Trade Ad

Charlies Angels dolls

Added a really cool pic of the Hasbro Charlies Angels Trade ad which features an awesome image of the original store display.

I've ignored girls toys for too long and for that I apologize. After "Super Sexy Underwear week" winds up, I'll do a whole week of toys. Got some neat stuff lined up!

A mountain of future therapy

wokka wokka

Folks, when are you going to learn it's not right to dress your children like borscht belt comedians? Little Jimmy up here now goes by the name Shecky, he refuses to quit ventriloquism and get a real job. Another life ruined, how many futures must we destroy?
Next week: Super Sexy Underpants Week!
