Toy-Ventures Indie Go-Go Campaign is Live!

My upcoming magazine Toy-Ventures is almost here!


The Toy-Ventures Indie Go-Go Fundraiser is now live. 

it's a pretty basic campaign and I'll walk you through what i'm doing, there are three options:

 

• Kick in a buck- We'll thank you with some spooky Super Monsters Wall Paper

• Get a digital copy- Even though we're fans of print, we realize you may not be and well, you can still help make this happen by contributing.

• Physical Copy of Issue #1 with two collectible Super Monsters Buttons featuring the photography of our cover artist Corey LeChat. We are doing a limited run of buttons and these will not be offered again should we sell out.
 

Stretch Goal:

If we get to 1500 copies sold, I'll increase the page count by eight pages and add scans of the 1975 and 1974 AHI toy catalogs.

Super Rare!

One of the nicest things that goes on at MegoMeet is that the dealer's humour me and allow me to document stuff I can't afford.

Case in point this Official Superman Super Streak by Azrak Hamway, one of the rarest rack toys I've ever come across.

My best guess is these didn't sell well due to the price point, the battery operated items from AHI always seem to have been produced in much lower numbers than stuff like the parachutists. 

If you're inclined to purchase this lovely man of steel, you can contact Vintage Toy Rescue but rest assured that $3 price tag is just there for atmosphere.

Toy-Ventures 18: Parachuting Planet of the Apes

This week, we talk about one of my favorite subjects, cheap rack toys but even better, they're  planet of the apes rack toys. 

 We get into the history of licensed parachute toys, which are some of the most fun but also bizarre toys we could buy for under a buck. So we talk about RipCord, Star Trek, Batman, Space:1999, Sgt. Rock and the Mighty Crusaders as well. It's the most fun you ever had before you lost it in a tree.

AHI James Bond Toys

Even though they were advertised for a couple of years in their catalogs, the Azrak Hamway James Bond series of Rack toys remains pretty hard to find on the secondary market. It seems they were produced in very low numbers. 

Recently a carded disc gun came on the secondary market prompting my podcast partner Jason Lenzi to quip "Is that Fred Grandy as James Bond?"

Squirtin' Super Monsters

Over the years, I've waxed a good de about my desire to own these wonderful (and incredibly rare) creations by Azrak Hamway. Seeing them in their carded form (they were introduced in 1975, it seems) only exacerbates the issue.

I'd love to own a carded Creature or Frankenstein one day but I am not sure I'll ever have the opportunity to do so. So strange that I'm smitten with something that once probably cost $.88 cents.

More Sky Diving Parachutists

 

Ever since I mocked up a set of parachuting AHI Super Monsters last year, I've been kind of smitten and inspired to make more. I had a major spurt of creativity this summer and here is the result.

Above is a Brick Mantooth Parachutist, this was inevitable and I'll likely do a bunch of different variations for him. I wish they made plaid spray paint.

 

We got AHI Parachutist figures for Space:1999, so why not Gerry Anderson's other 70s opus, UFO? I've got Ed Straker half done right now.

 

Finally I made this for my pal and podcast partner Jason Lenzi for his birthday (delivering a full two months late) it's the first of many TV detectives I plan to make. Seriously, I'm going to make a Quincy.
