Pod Stallions 53: The Black Hole

For our 53rd show, we are joined once again by former Famous Monsters editor and current host of "It Came From Blog" Mr David Weiner (@TikiAmbassador) for a rousing two hour discussion on Walt Disney's 1979 Science Fiction opus "The Black Hole".

The conversation talks about the film itself, the it's origins and somewhat discordant tone, the interesting cast, what the ending might mean, the multitude of  merchandise, it's trailer,  the comic book sequels and of course, the attempted remake.

We also touch on subjects like Star Wars, Shreddies cereal (blech), Salvage One, Starlog magazine and Buck Rogers. It's jam packed with late seventies science fiction goodness.

Pod Stallions 43: Top Ten Things We Miss about the 1970s

Our website turns 10 this month so we begin by discussing it's origins and why it came to be. With the topic already being nostalgia, we thought it would be fun to talk about the top ten thing we miss about the 1970s.

This is not a "things were better in our day" type discussion (We like Ebay and YouTube just fine thank you very much) but more about the certain rituals, tastes, establishments and items that sadly, no longer have a place in our modern world.

Topics range from Saturday morning TV to local toy stores, full comic book racks everywhere you looked, ice cream men on bicycles, long gone fast foods, Jason's crush on Rhoda Morgensten (and her mom!), Network Stars Battling, Heroes World adverts, colorful home decor and of course, wish books.

Be careful with episode 43 because the filling is hot!

Hit us up on our facebook page and tell us what you miss about the 1970s,

Mighty Crusaders Stunt Cycle

It's been a while since I've found a Rack Toy that excites me (that sounds weird) but this week I totally have. These toys come from Remco/AHI and are as I can figure, the last line of these kind of licensed affairs that AHI was so known for in the 70s and 80s.

Mighty Crusaders are a superhero team owned by Archie Comics, they have a great lineage but an awfully sporadic publishing history since the Golden Age. During the early 80s, they had a pretty decent attempt at a revival which spawned licensed toys from Remco.

While the Remco Mighty Crusaders action figure line is fairly commonly found, these toys must have been produced in much lower numbers.  I'm still not positive what got made and didn't .

Prior to this discovery, the only Rack Toys for the Mighty Crusaders I could confirm were these helicopters.

The back of the package suggests that Mighty Crusaders got the same treatment that Batman and Planet of the Apes did in the mid seventies with helicopters, Motorcycles and (gasp!) Parachute figures. (If you have one please email me, even if it's not for sale!)

A really nice shot of "The Web" figure, I'm glad that I keep running into one of my favourite characters when I do find this stuff.

If you have any input on this Mighty Crusaders merch, I'd love to hear from you!

1981 Parkes Run Colouring Book Catalog

Hey remember those big colouring books you got on birthdays and Christmas? They were done by a company called Parkes Run and they made a lot of cool licensed stuff using licenses like Superman the movie, Popeye, Peanuts and the Marvel comics characters!

Adult Colouring books are the all rage right now but I'd settle for this one, which was given to me by my aunt Cathy in 1978!

Oh Man Wolf, where's your movie?

Anyway, check out the 1981 Parkes Run Catalog here!

Marvel Comics Multi Mags 2 for 99 cents!

As readers of this blog know, I have a fondness for comic multi packs especially the Whitman ones for things like Micronauts or the Shogun Warriors.

That's why this 1981 ad from coluring book publisher Parkes Run (more on them later this week) intrigues me.

It seems that 1981, Marvel dumped Whitman in favour of Parkes Run and the format changed from 3 comics to 2, thanks inflation!

As a side note, my dad knew a distributor of these back in the early 1980s. I remember seeing a whole skid of these two packs in his warehouse. The man said to me "take as many comics as you want!" but my dad's face suggested that I should probably be happy with one.....

More Comic 3 Packs

I can't believe it's been over a year since I last raved about my mild obsession with Whitman comic poly bagged 3 packs of my youth. I guess that's because I haven't across many deals and actually let some awesome ones slip through my fingers.

Above is Shogun Warriors, while I never had any of the toys, I was really into this comic as a kid. Between this book,  Star Wars, Godzilla or Micronauts usually got my pocket money.

That is, unless Hellcat or Batgirl was on the cover of something, then I felt oddly compelled to buy that book.

This three pack of Gold Key Star Trek reprints is another personal best for me, while it has been opened, that just means I can enjoy the off model adventures of the Enterprise crew.

Dick Tracy Wrist TV

Larami pretty much slapped Dick Tracy's face on anything cop related in 1976 but also went the extra mile and make a toy of one of his most famous crime busting tools.

Although I've got to say the timing seems a little off, being a kid at the time my sole experience with the character came from a Mad magazine parody.

Rack Toys: Cheap, Crazed Playthings is a limited edition 144 page book from the creator of Plaid Stallions. Order from us and get three free promotional post cards.

Comic 3 pack love

Back when I collected comics "seriously" (AKA when I was 11) the most dreaded thing to own was a "reprint". That Whitman symbol or a diamond price tag meant the comic was worthless and Willy, the local expert (and the only kid with an Overstreet Guide) was quick to point that out and shame you.

It's ironic now, some 30 years later that pretty much the only comics I collect are beat to crap Gold Key Star Treks and any Whitman 3 pack I can find. These 3 packs especially dominated every toy store and gift shop I visited as a kid and I bought a great deal of them.

Above is my latest score, the Black Hole three pack which includes the spell binding first chapter of "Beyond the Black Hold" Gold Key's attempt to keep the story line going.

Back in the day, my dad was actually friends with the guy who distributed these 3 packs in my area. One Saturday he went to visit him and I tagged along. In the giant warehouse full of these comics, I heard the man say "Take as many as you want" to me and he strolled back into his office. Just before my dad followed him, he turned to me and held up two fingers.

I spent the entire time trying to find two sets that had nothing but cool comics I didn't already own, it was heaven.

S.T.A.R Team Promotional Comic

In 1978, Ideal Toys hobbled together a series of space toys using old molds and a generous helping of inspiration from George Lucas..

S.T.A.R Team actually beat the Kenner Star Wars product to the stores (Kenner was forced to sell empty boxes promising action figures but you probably knew that) and the lawsuits flew!
In an effort to create a back story kids might enjoy Ideal contacted the Marvel comics bullpen (as they had done for their Evel Knievel line) to create a promotional piece outlining the adventures of Zem 21 and his nemesis, the extremely talky Knight of Darkness.

It's a gripping tale written most likely in a gin soaked afternoon..

Everything's Archie!

Marx Archie figures

I never saw these Marx Archie figures as a kid or else I'd have been all over them, I've always been a big fan. These are prototypes of the actual figures as some of the head sculpts are off and they definitely didn't have articulated bodies like that, the actuall product has that lame Sunshine Family style going on.

Is it me or does that Archie figure look pissed? It looks like he's ready kick somebody's ass off camera....

Don't Mess With Jim Kirk!!!!

I'm happily busy today, so I can't do a CBT nor can I reveal my other weekend feature, TV Comics which is about comics based on TV shows, in case you thought it was about Tranvestite Comedians. For now, here is a Gold Key Star Trek panel that made me smile...

Colouring Book Theatre: Will Eisner's The Spirit

speed buggyColouring Book I got an early Easter present yesterday as Rob Kelly, creator of treasurycomics.com (and more blogs than humanly possible) offered to do a guest review. Me not doing any work is the best gift of all, take it away Rob!

Will Eisner never did anything the same as anyone else.

When I learned of the existence of an actual Spirit coloring book, published in 1974, (in research for my site treasurycomics.com), I was pretty surprised. After all, anyone old enough in the seventies to remember the Spirit probably was a tad past coloring book age, so I wondered who this book was aimed at. But who am I to question Will Eisner's business sense?

The book itself is treasury comic-sized, 10x14", and instead of a sequential story, it consists of fifteen classic Spirit splash pages, complete historical and story information for each of them.

Some of the splashes chosen for the book are unusual selections for a coloring book, like this one:

While others are a little more poster-ish and feature nice big figures to color:.

And some look like they'd be a huge coloring project to undertake:

...you'd have to buy a second box of crayons before you could finish that one!

After an ad for other "Gleeful Guides by Will Eisner"(?) like Occult Cookery(??), Communicating with Plants, and Living with Astrology, the back cover features a nice big friendly shot of Denny Colt:

I'm not sure where these were sold--there's no price or UPC code, so I doubt they ever made it to any department or toy stores. They were at least sold via Warren Publication's Captain Company, who ran a small ad for it in their magazines at the time:

Will Eisner never believed comic books, as a medium, were meant to be just junk entertainment. And that belief found its way into every Spirit project, even a coloring book. You could give this book to a kid and it would challenge them, just like his work always did.

...I wonder if this will ever show up in DC's Spirit Archives series?

Got a colouring book you'd like to guest review? Drop me a line!
