We're back with a look at a much maligned (and let's face it, it's not great) chunk of our childhood, the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special.
Look, we're not going to take such low hanging fruit, the truth is, it's not any worse than most of what was called "entertainment" in 1978. In fact, it's kind of status quo, so forgive it, love and like us, talk about what we do enjoy. We both seriously want action figures of those cartoon characters and if you're listening, so do you.
As always, the conversation strays to the Ice Pirates, action figures, style guides, Brian's parents taking him to inappropriate movies and a spirited debate about the amazing effects of nostalgia.
Also, Brian wants to apologize for what he said about the Goonies, please don't kill him. He has kids.
So happy life day and give us spirited debate on our facebook wall.

Another great show, guys. Just like always. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAction figures are a distinct possibility! At the risk of overstating the obvious, Disney has nearly a century of experience dealing with the collectibles market and the often astoundingly deep pockets of well-heeled fans. Judging from the kind of movies they've been releasing since acquiring the franchise, Star Wars is just another property to them, an incredibly lucrative one at that.
ReplyDeleteIf Disney recognizes there's real market -need- for, say, a Mermeia action figure, it'll happen. Buying the -complete- series of Holiday Special figures is going to be a serious outlay. There's a lot of 'em.

Think of the boxed sets as well! If the Modal Nodes can get the deluxe package treatment, Jefferson Starship deserves the same, hopefully with purple UV reactive musical instruments for the figures as well. :)
I liked this special when it first aired, and I still enjoy it. Yes, it's strange, yet really entertaining. And I never understood the backlash, I mean it was Star Wars on TV, and the Jefferson Starship song and animated sequence are great. Maybe it's because anything Star Wars I generally enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI tell everyone who has never seen this to never see it. They only thing they should see is the Boba Fett cartoon.
