Star Wars sale at Osco

Another newspaper line illustrated gem, this one from Osco.

I never had the Star Destroyer Playset but recently discovered some collectors I know have this weird hate on for it. Was it a disappointing toy?

  1. Osco used that same line art in an ad you posted on March 02, 2016, only it was in black & white and included Yoda.

  2. I had the Star Destroyer Playset and loved it. Mind you, I was six at the time. I never understood nerd hate over silly things like that. File that under hate for the 13th Doctor.

  3. I like the Star Destroyer playset a lot, but I think most collectors hate it just because it doesn't look that much like a Star Destroyer.

  4. I too like the Star Destroyer playset and think it's underrated. It grips onto your arm so you hold it like the Falcon. I like to think of it more as a mobile attack base for Darth Vader.

The Star Destroyer playset does not disappoint. I got mine for Christmas in 1980 (along with the 15" IG-88 figure), and everything still works, including the red light in Vader's meditation chamber. Even my nephew has played with it.

That's a really nice ad. I saved a few myself, from Zayre and Lionel Playworld.

  6. The Star Destroyer was a little hard to play with because there wasn't much room to move the figures around in. It was no Death Star playset. But it was ok. The "meditation chamber" was a nice feature, but not sure why it would glow red. I liked the escape hatch feature. Also, why could you hang figures upside down in it? Was that a deleted scened from "Empire"? I just assumed it was another way Vader tortured people with The Force. Or maybe they got it mixed up with the Wampa scene!?
