The Infamous Sears 1975 Peek-a-Boo Catalog Controversey

Recently while searching Ebay for catalogs (which I do way too much) I discovered an auction stating it was the "Infamous Sears Peek-A-Boo Catalog" from 1975. Curious, I checked it out and apparently it was pulled because on page 602, you could clearly see a man-part in an underwear ad.

Well, I had to have this catalog but I probably would have bid anyway. So without further delay is page 602.

Now of course, it's our spokes person Brick Mantooth in the picture, it just had to be. So instead of just showing his potato, people claim that you can see his loin tip (I'll stop with the food/wang jokes now). In case this isn't the sort of thing you want to view on a Monday morn, I've left it up to you to click the pic and see for yourself.

What I discovered while writing about this is it's actually been well written about previously and this article from the Straight Dope dismisses that it's actually Brick's Junk but more of a printer error. I'd be inclined to agree but this whole thing amuses me way more than it should....

  2. I don't see it either... Maybe it's just not so shocking today. :P

Still not as obvious as the dog wang image from the Ikea catalog from a year or two ago...

  4. My sister has this very catalog and it is a VERY SUBTLE "thing" (pun intended).

Also of note in this catalog is a celebrity model sighting---Buck Roger's Erin Gray. She shows up a number of times in the catalog.

  5. well, that's what they get for making him pull his boxers up to his navel!

makes me think of the old American Bandstand appearance of Abba, where one of the girls skirt was very short and she was going commando.

  6. if that thing hanging out at the bottom of his boxers is supposed to be the tip of his penis then that dude is hung!! Why is he working for sears when he could be bigger than Johnny Wadd, literally and figuratively! I've never heard of a guy so long he hung out the leg-holes of his boxers, so either that's a printer error or some smart-ass catalog editor got high and put it in there for fun.

  7. I agree with Jimmy... that thing has been put there in the 70s equivalent of photoshopping it; airbrushing, I guess. That, or it's an optical illusion, an accidental coincidence.

  8. I WISH I could see some Mantooth meat, these adds made me the man I am today no doubt.

  9. I found one of the catalogs in 1977 after hearing about it. I sold it to a Ephemera collector back then for $10.

  10. My mom actually showed me the ad, since all her friends were talking about it. I was a teen...but it sure looked like "little brick" was peeking out to me. Also I was mortified that my mother thought it was such a riot.
