I never had the Star Destroyer Playset but recently discovered some collectors I know have this weird hate on for it. Was it a disappointing toy?

Squirtin' Apes

A recent happy pick up for me is this Doctor Zauis squirt gun by AHI, I'll probably never get a creature from the black lagoon but this is pretty swell.

I hope at least one of these displays survived.

Pod Stallions 54: Movies of 1982

For our 54th show, we start with a brief (well for us) discussion about our thoughts on the newest actor to take the mantle of Doctor Who. 

Then we dig deep into the movies released the summer of 1982. Some call it the greatest summer for movies and hey, a lot of these movies went from flops to being revered, so it's worth discussing.

Topics include spirited debate on Blade Runner, Poltergeist, Beast Master, The Wrath of Khan, Tron, Dark Crystal, The Thing, Conan the Barbarian, Swamp Thing among others.

As always we get sidetracked into talking about merchandise, carnivals, Harrison Ford, Marvel comics, Brian's love for the work of Jim Wynorski and how freaking expensive it was to buy VHS movies back in the day.....

T Shirts: 1977

Looking at this selection of adult t-shirts,  I'm amazed by a few things 1) How much merchandise based on "The Shadow" was made in the mid 1970s 2) The whole CB thing and 3) Sears clearly owes Robert Crumb some money.

The Kenner Empire

It was around this time as a kid that I realized that I could never, ever "Collect Them All" when it came to Star Wars. Not that I had everything made leading up to this point but there was probably some child like naivete that I could catch up somehow.

Fortunately for me, I was close friends with a kid who GOT EVERYTHING and while he wasn't always a joy to be around, my goodness his basement was a wonderland!

Ladies, heed my warning, do not underestimate his Aqua-Velva drenched charm. This kid is an experienced first base veteran! 

Martin Landau: A Toy Tribute

I was kinda crushed to hear of the passing of Martin Landau yesterday besides being a fan of his work, there is also a true connection to him and this site.

It was my admiration for merchandise based on Space:1999 that got me into toy collecting in the first place, so without Martin Landau toys, no PlaidStallions. I figured the best thing to do would be to showcase my favourite items that feature his likeness, so please join me after the jump!

Amsco Planet of the Apes Adventure Set

Amsco famously made these killer adventure sets for properties like Space:1999,  The Walton's and most famously Marvel Superheroes.

I was gifted this Planet of the Apes set a couple of years ago but never put it together, so in honour of Apes week, I sat on my office floor and did just that.

You know what? It's awesome and loaded with tons of easter eggs from the movies and tv series. I love it! Check it out after the jump.

Unarmed Parachuting Apes!

Very happy to have finally tracked down this tough as nails variant in one of my favourite toy themes of all time, Parachutin' Rack Toys.

For some reason, Azrak Hamway made a running change to the their Planet of the Apes parachute figures. They came armed and unarmed, which is befuddling considering they probably only made these for a year or so.

I'm guessing by the fact that the armed Apes are so much easier to track down than the "pacifist" versions (seriously this took me ten years to find one) that they came later but honestly, I don't know much as to why they'd make a completely new figure for a dime store toy.

Were you there? have any photos? I'd love to include them in our latest book project Mall of Justice.

Mall of Justice is a love letter to the sensational personal appearances of our comic book, TV, movie and toy icons during the 1970s and 80s.

Whether it's Adam West at a car show, He-Man at a Toys R Us opening or an ersatz Chewbacca at a stereo store, Mall of Justice melds vintage photos with childhood recollection of these epic meetings.

While I will design and eventually publish the book (via PlaidStallions Press), it's a project we can all get involved with!

How you can get involved:
I'm looking for your photos and your recollections! Even if you've submitted
them to the site before, I would likely need higher resolution and I'd want to
talk to you.

What am i looking for:

Appearances of costumed characters during the 1970s and 80s, be they from comicbooks (Batman, the Hulk) , cartoons (, toy lines (Masters of the Universe, GI Joe)  or movies (Planet of the Apes,Star Wars) , a date and place and a description of how you felt meeting theseiconic characters. Did you think they were real?

Does it have to specifically be in a mall:

HECK NO! Car shows, county fairs, grocery stores, heck I'd even accept birthday party shots. It's all fair game.

Mattel Battlestar Galactica Action Figure Commercial

Happy Friday!


Here is another commercial transfer, this it the original Mattel Battlestar Galactica Action Figure commercial from 1979, a new transfer of the original reel. 

It's kind of ironic that this features mainly the 'peg warming" characters like Imperious leader, Ovion and Daggit. Also, why does Starbuck talk like a robot?

TV Magic

This is one of the few times where I gave myself a "Hey! I had this!" moment.

Inspired by a magic based kid's game show that ran every morning, I got my parents to buy me the "Magic Money" set.

There is a vague recollection of disappointment that the set didn't produce dollar bills, have I mentioned that I was a really daft kid?

Zayre Wars

I think this ad nicely captures the moment in time where my personal lust for all things Star Wars reached a pinnacle. As a kid I had all but two (never got a 12 inch Vader or R2) of the items pictured here. All of them got ruined not by neglect but by constant play.

The Undercover Story of Big Jim's P.A.C.K

One of the most charming things about the Big Jim's P.A.C.K toyline is it's use of comics to market to children. They also employed legends to do them. The initial designs were by Jack Kirby and the later giveaway comic book was drawn by John Buscema.

All of the later packaging had comic stories on the back, I've showcased the Torpedo Fist one here but thought it would be fun to look at the origin of the P.A.C.K on the back of double trouble Big Jim's box.

Colouring Book Theatre: Gerrry Anderson UFO

One of the nicest things I received at Mego Meet was this colouring book, which frankly, I didn't know existed until it was placed in my hands.

The one caveat my pal Corey had was that he hoped it would be featured on CBT. Wish granted!  (One little bit of trivia, the striking woman on the cover is Dr. Strange's real life mother)

While filled with colourful costumes, purple wigs and cool tech, Gerry Anderson's UFO is also a show that featured dark story lines and adult themes. It doesn't exactly scream "Children's colouring book" which of course, makes it all the more delicious to me. (See Dune)

A Salute to Canadian Toy Packaging

It's not a closely guarded secret that I'm Canadian. So on the day of my country's 150th birthday, it seems duly patriotic that i share my favourite toys in Canadian packaging. 

Due to having two official languages, we had different toy packages than the US and brother,  it's tough to find.  Hunting these is my obsession because there is no better whallop of nostalgia for me, enjoy!
