Steve Austin's Arch Enemy Dr. Kromedome!

Dr. Kromedome was a clever creation by department store chain Montgomery Wards and Mego to make up for the lack of villains for the Kenner Six Million Dollar Man line. He was totally unlicensed, cost the same as Steve and quite silly looking, like some sort of Cyborg Pimp and that's why I love him so much.

Here is a video I did about Dr. KromeDome for the MegoMuseum.

Return of the Space Apes!

A couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to the Space Apes, a vintage series of action figures that seemed to be knocking off Mego's Planet of the Apes line but upon further reflection, these appear to be factory seconds poly bagged and sold off to make a quick buck, more after the jump:

Toy-Ventures Indie Go-Go Campaign is Live!

My upcoming magazine Toy-Ventures is almost here!

The Toy-Ventures Indie Go-Go Fundraiser is now live

it's a pretty basic campaign and I'll walk you through what i'm doing, there are three options:

  • Kick in a buck- We'll thank you with some spooky Super Monsters Wall Paper

  • Get a digital copy- Even though we're fans of print, we realize you may not be and well, you can still help make this happen by contributing.

  • Physical Copy of Issue #1 with two collectible Super Monsters Buttons featuring the photography of our cover artist Corey LeChat. We are doing a limited run of buttons and these will not be offered again should we sell out.
  •

    Stretch Goal:

If we get to 1500 copies sold, I'll increase the page count by eight pages and add scans of the 1975 and 1974 AHI toy catalogs.

    Other Ways You Can Help

Please share this campaign on your social media accounts, your toy groups, and with anyone you think might want to read Toy-Ventures Magazine. Getting the word out is the most important goal of this publication.

It's really the most important thing right now, thank you for reading this and even being interested, I really appreciate it.

Das Space Kit

As I kid, I begged for the DAS Pronto Space Kit and got it for Christmas in 1980. I wrongly assumed I could create extra characters for my Star Wars adventures. The figures were static, really couldn't stand all that well and did I mention I sucked at painting when I was 9?

5 Awesome Things on eBay this week

The Incredible Hulk UK Annual- We just did a podcast today about UK annuals and this one was a topic of discussion. It's the only time in comic form that we have this rendition of the Hulk, the comics are all about Bill Bixby turning into Lou Ferrigno, I found that so charming.

Bendy Toys Buck Rogers and Twiki set- Speaking of charming, these foam rubber action figures were exclusive to the United Kingdom and are just so kooky. I own a set myself and really love Buck's weird non-accurate space suit.

Godzilla's Gang figure by Mattel- Godzilla's Gang was sold at the same time as the Shogun Warriors, it was a series of Japanese Monster vinyls where most of the character were from Ultra-Man shows, with the exception of Godzilla of course. Nobody talks about these! They're super awesome and I want them all!

SWAT Iron On Transfer- I'm not a big fan of the series but I love this really striking artwork. That would really pop on a shirt.

Battle of the Planets Mego Style Figure- The Popy TV Heroes brand were meant to emulate the Mego World's Greatest Superheroes figures (which Popy also sold in Japan). This one was my grail for decades, I mean this is the figure I would have killed for in 1979.

Pod Stallions 80: British Annuals

It's just Jason and Brian this time around and our topic this week was inspired by some posts in our Facebook group.

British Annuals are hardback books that go back to the 1940s and over the decades they have made a staggering amount of different licenses and properties.

We start by talking about Doctor Who (a lot of people's introduction to the annual) but discuss Holmes and Yo-Yo, V, The Avengers, Adam Adamant,  Kenny Everett, The Beano, Thunderbirds, Look-In, Abba, Space:1999, UFO, Kung Fu, Star Trek, Tomorrow People, Gold Key Comics, Brian's childhood fears about England and finish off just talking about Buck Rogers for no good reason.

As a side bonus, we will be sharing our collection of UK annuals in our facebook group, join us!

The Incredible Hulk Official Utility Belt

I've long believed that the Remco Incredible Hulk Utility belt is the most ridiculous piece of Hulk merchandising produced, I mean the guy doesn't have gadgets and generally, his pants are held up by a rope or possibly a toaster cord.

It appears, however, that Remco sold a bunch of these because there are two versions, my Corey LeChat sent me these photos recently of the two, distinctly different Hulk Utility belts, more after the jump:

Ideal King Kong Board Game

I have a fondness for "Kong Mania 1977" but own little to none of it's merchandise. Being a board game nut, I think this is one I'd like to add to our repertoire.

Can Can

I think "beer can collecting" may top the list of "70s kid hobbies that won't make a comeback" I'd put my money on flocking bottles before this.

now if you'll excuse I'm going to try and track down some "big Cat Malt Liquor", I pray they still make it.

Toy-Ventures: Space Apes : Planet of the Apes Knockoffs?

After a long break, I have another wonderful mystery box of Knock-Offs from the United Kingdom, this week we're going to meet The Space Apes, a series of action figures that seem to resemble the Mego Planet of the Apes figures but with some noticeable differences.

Kenner Return of the Jedi 1983

Christmas of 1983 would be the first one where I didn't get a Star Wars toy in well, five years. After Jedi, I couldn't help feel like it was over, and well, going into the eighth grade was also a huge factor. I still fondly looked at this stuff on the shelves.

The Incredible Hulk Play Tent

Wow, would you look at those happy expressions? The Incredible Hulk was the Garfield of the 1970s, if they made it, they put the Hulk on it....
